The Travel Spine

I am writing this because I want to share my story. I went to the mountains recently. It was a trip that I will remember for a long time. People always ask me where they should go in Himachal Pradesh. I always tell them to go to Manali. But inside Manali there is one place you cannot miss. That place is Solang Valley.

When you reach there you feel something different. The air is cold and fresh. The city noise is gone. I am just a normal traveler like you. I do not know fancy words. I just know how I felt. So I am writing this guide to help you plan your trip. I will tell you everything about the money you need and what you can do there.

Solang Valley

How to Reach This Beautiful Place

Reaching Solang Valley is easy if you are already in Manali. It is not very far. It is about fourteen kilometers away from the main town. You have to take a road that goes up the mountain.

Most people hire a taxi. You can find taxis easily at the mall road stand. The drivers are usually friendly. They know the road very well. The road is curvy. It goes left and right. If you get sick in cars you should sit near the window. Open the window a little bit. The fresh air helps.

You can also rent a bike. I saw many young people on bikes. They looked happy. Riding a bike there must be fun. But you must be careful. The road can be slippery. If there is snow the police might stop bikes. So check before you rent one. There are also buses but they are crowded. A private taxi is the best option if you have family with you.

What Is So Special About It

You might think it is just a valley. But it is more than that. Solang Valley is like a playground. God made this playground for us. On one side you see big mountains. On the other side you see the river. The river flows very fast. The sound of the water is loud.

The best thing is the vibe. Everyone there is happy. People are shouting with joy. Kids are running around. You see colorful parachutes in the sky. It looks like a painting. When I first saw it I stopped walking. I just stood there and looked. It was so beautiful.

The valley changes its color. In winter it is white. In summer it is green. Both colors are pretty. It depends on what you like. I like the white color of snow more. It feels magical.

The Weather You Can Expect

The weather is tricky. In the mountains you never know. One minute the sun is shining. The next minute clouds come. Then it might rain.

If you go in winter be ready for cold. It gets freezing. You need thick jackets. You need gloves and caps. Sometimes the temperature goes below zero. The water freezes. But that is when you see snow. Solang Valley becomes a snow paradise in winter. This happens from December to February.

Summer is pleasant. The sun is warm but the air is cool. You can wear a light sweater. You do not need heavy coats. This is from April to June. It is the best time for outdoor fun. You can walk around without feeling too cold.

Monsoon is the time I avoid. It rains a lot in July and August. The roads get blocked sometimes. There are landslides. It can be risky. So plan carefully if you go in monsoon.

Activities You Must Try

This is the main part. People come here for adventure. There are so many things to do. You will not get bored.

The most famous thing is paragliding. You have to try it. I was scared at first. But then I did it. You run off the edge of the hill. And then you fly. You fly like a bird. The pilot is with you. He controls the parachute. You just sit and look down. You can see the whole of Solang Valley from the top. The people look like ants. The cars look like toys. It is a little expensive but it is worth it.

Another fun thing is the ATV ride. These are big bikes with four wheels. They can go on mud and rocks. You can drive it yourself. A guide will sit behind you. It is bumpy and fast. You will get dirty with mud but you will laugh a lot.

If you go in winter you can do skiing. There are people who teach you. They give you skis and sticks. It is hard to balance. I fell down many times. My pants got wet. But it was fun. Everyone falls down. Do not feel shy. Just get up and try again.

The Famous Ropeway Ride

There is a big cable car there. It is called the ropeway. You buy a ticket and sit in a cabin. The cabin takes you up the mountain. It goes very high. The ride is smooth.

When you reach the top the view is amazing. You are very high up. You can see mountains that are far away. Those mountains are covered in snow all year. It is very windy up there. Hold your hat or it will fly away.

There is a small cafe at the top. You can eat snacks there. Imagine eating hot noodles while looking at the snow peaks. It is a great feeling. The ropeway is a good activity for older people too. They do not have to walk. They can just sit and enjoy the view of Solang Valley.

Food Options Available

After all the fun you will get hungry. The cold air makes you very hungry. There are many food stalls. They are simple shops. They do not have fancy chairs. You sit on plastic chairs or benches.

The most popular food is Maggi. I do not know why but mountain Maggi tastes better. They put some vegetables and spices. It is hot and soupy. It warms you up. You can also get momos. The momos are steamed and soft. The red chutney is very spicy. Be careful with the chutney.

You also get tea and coffee. Holding a hot cup of tea in the cold is the best comfort. There are also vendors selling corn. They roast the corn on fire. They put lemon and salt on it. It is very tasty.

If you want a proper meal there are restaurants too. You can get rice and dal. You can get roti and sabzi. The food is simple and fresh.

Understanding the Costs

You need to carry cash. Some small shops do not take online payments. The network can be bad too. So cash is safe.

The taxi from Manali to Solang Valley will cost money. The drivers charge for a round trip. They wait for you there. It can cost anywhere between one thousand to two thousand rupees. It depends on the season. In peak season they charge more.

The activities have fixed rates usually. Paragliding can cost around three thousand rupees for a long flight. Short flights are cheaper. The ropeway ticket is around seven hundred rupees. The ATV ride is about five hundred to one thousand rupees.

Skiing prices vary. You have to rent the dress and boots. Then you pay the instructor. It can total up to one thousand rupees.

Food is cheap. A plate of Maggi is around fifty or sixty rupees. Tea is twenty rupees. So eating is not expensive. The main cost is the travel and the adventure sports.

What to Pack for the Trip

Packing is important. You do not want to be cold. Even in summer bring a jacket. The weather changes fast.

Wear comfortable shoes. You have to walk on stones and mud. Do not wear heels or fancy sandals. Sports shoes are the best. If you go in winter wear boots.

Bring sunglasses. The sun can be bright. If there is snow the reflection hurts the eyes. Sunglasses will protect you. Also bring sunscreen. The mountain sun can burn your skin quickly.

Carry a small bag. Put a water bottle in it. You will get thirsty. Buying water bottles everywhere is not good. Plastic is bad for the mountains. Bring your own bottle and refill it.

Safety Tips for Everyone

The place is safe but you must be careful. Do not go to dangerous edges. The cliffs are steep. If you slip you can get hurt. Stay on the marked paths.

When you do adventure sports listen to the instructor. They know best. Check the safety gear. Make sure the helmet fits you. If you feel unsafe say no. It is your life.

If you have kids keep hold of their hands. It is crowded. They can get lost. Also do not let them run near the edge.

If you have breathing problems take it easy. Solang Valley is at a height. The oxygen is a little less. Do not run too much. Walk slowly. Drink water.

Avoiding the Crowds

This place is very famous. So it gets very crowded. In May and June there are too many people. There are traffic jams. Sometimes you get stuck in traffic for hours. It can be frustrating.

To avoid this start your day early. Leave your hotel by eight in the morning. You will reach there before the rush. You can enjoy the place when it is quiet. By the time the crowd comes you will be done.

Weekends are also very busy. If you can go on a weekday it is better. Tuesday or Wednesday is usually less crowded. You will get better rates for activities too.

Respecting the Nature

The mountains are beautiful because they are clean. But I saw trash there. People throw wrappers and bottles. This makes me sad. We must keep Solang Valley clean.

Please carry a trash bag. Put your waste in it. Bring it back to the town and throw it in a dustbin. Do not throw anything in the river. The river water is pure. We should not make it dirty.

Respect the locals too. They live there. It is their home. Be polite to them. Ask before taking photos of local women. It is good manners.

My Personal Favorite Moment

I want to share my best memory. It was evening time. Most people had left. The sun was going down behind the mountains. The sky turned orange and pink.

I sat on a big rock near the river. I just listened to the water. The wind was cold on my face. I felt so small in front of the big mountains. All my worries went away. I felt peace.

That is why I love travel. It heals you. It makes you forget your stress. And Solang Valley is the perfect place for that.

Is It Worth the Hype

You might wonder if it is too touristy. Yes it is touristy. But it is famous for a reason. The views are unmatched. The activities are fun.

Even if you do not like crowds you can find a quiet spot. You just have to walk a little further away from the main parking. Walk towards the river. Sit there. You will love it.

I think everyone should go there once. It is a classic mountain experience. You see snow. You see river. You see sky. What else do you need.

Some Last Advice

Check your car tires if you drive. The road is steep. The brakes should be good.

Book your hotel in advance. In peak season hotels get full. You do not want to run around finding a room.

Carry some basic medicines. For headache and vomiting. The curvy roads make people sick. Having medicine helps.

Do not expect luxury toilets there. The public toilets are basic. They might not be very clean. Be prepared for that.
